Your Ultimate Guide to Reusing Items and Why to do so
Ever since I was a child and had some people present to my grade school class about the 3 R’s, I’ve been pretty passionate about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. Reusing items is simply a habit for me now and I love it because I get to save money and the environment at the same time.

10 Reasons to Reuse and Repurpose Items
We write a lot about reusing, repurposing, and upcycling on our blog and that’s for good reason! There are a number of benefits to giving items a second chance at life–benefits both for our planet and for ourselves.
Here are 10 reasons why it is great to reuse items before throwing them away.
Reusing items:
1. Reduces Waste: Plain and simple, reusing items keeps them out of landfills, which means less waste is accumulating on the planet.
2. Saves Money on Household Purchases: Repurposing old items—like using glass jars for food storage or turning worn-out T-shirts into cleaning rags—can reduce the need to buy new products. This not only reduces waste, but saves money.
3. Conserves Resources: Reusing items reduces the demand for the raw materials, energy, and water needed to manufacture new goods.
4. Lowers your Carbon Footprint: Repurposing items often requires less energy than recycling or manufacturing, which helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and your carbon footprint.
5. Encourages Creativity: Thinking up new ways to turn old or broken items into something new can get the creative juices flowing! It’s a great opportunity for play and for trying new creative ideas.
6. Promotes Sustainability: Reusing items supports a more circular economy. It allows materials to be used for longer and more thoughtfully.
7. Gives Opportunity to Create Personalized Home Décor: DIY projects using old items gives you the chance to create unique and meaningful furniture or decorations at little or no cost. For a little inspiration, check out our DIY projects here: Upcycled Furniture
8. Teaches Kids about Sustainability: Reusing items around the house can help teach children the importance of caring for the environment. Repurposing items together can allow for conversations about the environment and about being responsible with finances.
9. Encourages a Mindful Lifestyle: Thinking twice before throwing something out helps us be more mindful about our purchases and our needs. Reusing items can help us be more intentional about our choices and can help us be less wasteful.
10. Sets a Positive Example: Making the effort to reuse items helps to set a positive example for others and will hopefully help to foster a culture of sustainable lifestyle choices.
