Baking soda in the kitchen
When it comes to cleaning, baking soda’s gentle abrasiveness and natural alkalinity make it a superb choice for tackling grime, neutralizing odors, and breaking down grease. In the kitchen, for example, baking soda shines as a multi-use cleaner.
Sprinkle it on stubborn stains in the sink or other surfaces that can handle mild abrasion, and scrub with a damp sponge for a scratch-free clean. It’s also effective at deodorizing the refrigerator—just place an open box inside to absorb unwanted smells. For tougher messes like burnt pots, a paste of baking soda and water left to sit before scrubbing can work wonders, saving you from harsh chemical alternatives.
One of my favourite budget-saving and waste-reducing projects for the kitchen has been making my own dishwasher tablets, see the post here. It’s a pretty simple process and I actually found them to be quite effective!

Baking soda in the bathroom
The bathroom is another great place to reduce reliance on chemicals and swap them out with a baking-soda based cleaner. An easy and effective use is to mix baking soda with a small amount of water to create a paste for scrubbing soap scum off shower tiles and tubs (ensure that the surfaces can handle some mild abrasion before using this mixture). I have had great results on my old enameled tub by sprinkling baking soda and a bit of castile soap, then scrubbing with lemons left over from making lemonade or sorbet – it smells great and sparkles!
When combined with vinegar, baking soda becomes a great natural option for unclogging drains and dissolving buildup—avoiding the toxic ingredients found in many commercial drain cleaners that harm aquatic ecosystems. I’ve had success with this for smaller blockages, however other methods might be required if the blockage is more significant.
Baking soda in personal care
Beyond cleaning, baking soda offers toxin free options for personal care routines, that are also eco-friendly, and zero-waste. I have a favourite homemade deodorant recipe that uses baking soda, see the post here! Making your own deodorant is a great budget helper (some natural deodorants can be around $10 each, mine costed out at about $3) and is sustainable in that the packaging from a previous deodorant can be used, and healthier as it uses natural ingredients. It’s can also be fun to customize your own scent with essential oils!

Baking soda and sustainability
Conventional household cleaners and personal care products often contain chemicals that contribute to indoor air pollution and contaminate waterways once washed down the drain. Additionally, many commonly used products also come packaged in single-use plastics that end up in landfills and oceans. By switching to baking soda, we can reduce reliance on toxic ingredients and minimize plastic waste.
Baking soda is a budget-friendly, sustainable solution way to maintain a clean, healthy home while minimizing impact on the environment. So consider stocking up on baking soda and experimenting with these natural, cost-effective hacks—you’ll be surprised at how far a little box can go!
Have you ever experimented by making your own products with natural ingredients?
