Sustainability Thoughts for Days When Life Gives you Lemons
A while ago I wrote about things you can do for the environment when you are too tired to care. Sometimes life is just too overwhelming to be able to focus on sustainability and I really get that. We cannot be all things all the time and it’s important to acknowledge that. This week I’ve been dealing with a completely different overwhelming life issue which has made me think about the idea of sustainability when you are physically unable to do much. Life’s Unexpected Setbacks Last week I ended up injuring myself in a way that has left me physically unable to do much. Now, don’t get me wrong, I…

Reconnecting with Nature and Self by Disconnecting from the World
The world is a noisy place. And life has its own noisiness to it too. It’s a rare thing to be able to escape all of this and hit reset, but last month I had the chance to do just that when I snuck away to Bowen Island for a few days. This idyllic little island is just off the coast of Vancouver, BC and accessible by a short ferry ride. While I was indeed retreating from the world, it was less of a running away from and more of a running towards something in that retreat. Restoring connection with nature: Marking the solstice
In the past few weeks we’ve been exploring how a disconnection from nature can cause us to undertake activities that harm our planet. So this week I’d like to explore an way of restoring connection! We start to live more by the rhythms of light and darkness, our activities are driven by the weather, and we hear and see nature more as we sit quietly in the midst of it. It’s so difficult to do this in the winter, in cold climates at least,…

3 Things You Can do for the Planet When You’re too Tired to Care
Do you ever have those days (weeks? months?) where you feel too tired and overwhelmed to care much about the issues facing our planet? I’m having one of those weeks this week. The world’s been a pretty overwhelming place these last few years, so it’s bound to happen. It’s during these times that I’m more prone to make poor choices for our planet. Whether it’s buying convenience food, paying less attention to my recycle/garbage decisions, or having other wasteful moments, sometimes I feel too tired to commit to my desire to help the planet. Even when we’re at our lowest or most tired, though, I’m of the mindset that there…

What is Sustainable Self Care and How to Practice it
The start to this year has been tough. Add in the fact that we’re years into a pandemic and things feel exhausting. This is why self care has been at the top of my mind lately as I’ve been in serious need of it. Self care these days seems to be synonymous with “treating oneself,” which has gotten me thinking about what sustainable self care looks like. Can self care be sustainable and eco-friendly? I’m sharing a few thoughts on why I think sustainable self care exists. What is Self Care? First, let’s break down some details on what self care is. Self care will look different for everyone, but…
