Why Bottle Deposit Systems are Good for the Planet
Incentivizing people to participate in climate positive actions such as recycling can be an effective way to tackle climate change. While adding financial stresses to already maxed out grocery budgets could be a controversial conversation, bottle deposit systems have a proven track record of environmental and economic benefits. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. Michelle at Boomer Eco Crusader is starting off our conversation this month with her post “Carrot or stick? Which works better to reduce our environmental footprint.” Learn more about the Climate Change Collective below. History of Bottle Deposit System in BC I’m always surprised to hear that other places—even within Canada—do not have…

How Turning Down your Household’s Heat Helps the Environment
As days get colder, the natural reaction will be to turn up the heat to get warm. We often hear advice to keep the heat low and to layer on sweaters and blankets instead. The main reasoning tends to be that this can save a bit of money, but it is also tied to helping the environment. I live in a rental where my heat and hot water are included in the rent, so I don’t benefit financially from less heat. This made me wonder what other benefits there are and how turning down my heat can help the environment. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. Molly…

How joining together makes a difference for our planet
The last couple of months I’ve been pretty close to house-bound due to a recent injury. This period of time has truly highlighted the value of community to me. I would have suffered and struggled so much more if it were not for the people that rallied around me. It feels fitting that we’ve come up on the two year anniversary of our Climate Change Collective. The Climate Change Collective is a group of bloggers that have monthly conversations via our blogs about different climate change related topics. This month, we’re taking time to look back on how many topics we’ve covered together. For me, this anniversary is a reminder…

Looking into the Life Cycle of Plastic
Plastic Free July is all about minimizing the plastic in our lives, but why is plastic so bad? A part of the problem is that plastic does not break down. Plastic is not biodegradable, so it takes hundreds of years for plastic to go anywhere. There is an entire life cycle of plastic before it gets to the garbage bin, though, so I want to take a look at this and see how else plastic hurts our planet. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. We’re happy to contribute the lead post for the conversation this month. Learn more about the Climate Change Collective below. 31 Plastic Free Swaps for Plastic Free July
It’s one of our favourite months of the year: Plastic Free July! It’s a month of collaborative ideas and a social media movement all about going plastic free. Plastic is so prevalent in our lives that we can fail to notice that it’s there. This is why it’s so great that Caroline from Enviroline Blog has started this month’s Climate Change Collective conversation by talking about small steps we can take for Plastic Free July because small steps can make a huge impact. I’m adding to the conversation by sharing 31 plastic free swaps you make make this month. [I]f we all take small steps it can lead to a…

Why it’s Important to Connect to our Planet and some ways to do so
I was travelling on the ferry last night and standing in awe looking at the view: ocean expanding to the islands, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and the sun setting turning the sky all shades of pink and orange. To say I’m lucky to live where I do is an understatement. What is not an understatement is saying that life gets so busy and overwhelming sometimes that it is hard to stop and appreciate exactly what is surrounding me. It’s one of the reasons why Molly’s Climate Change Collective post resonated with me this month–especially when she talks about an emotional connection with nature fostering a deeper understanding. I am…
