Looking into the Life Cycle of Plastic
Plastic Free July is all about minimizing the plastic in our lives, but why is plastic so bad? A part of the problem is that plastic does not break down. Plastic is not biodegradable, so it takes hundreds of years for plastic to go anywhere. There is an entire life cycle of plastic before it gets to the garbage bin, though, so I want to take a look at this and see how else plastic hurts our planet. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. We’re happy to contribute the lead post for the conversation this month. Learn more about the Climate Change Collective below. Why it’s Important to Connect to our Planet and some ways to do so
I was travelling on the ferry last night and standing in awe looking at the view: ocean expanding to the islands, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and the sun setting turning the sky all shades of pink and orange. To say I’m lucky to live where I do is an understatement. What is not an understatement is saying that life gets so busy and overwhelming sometimes that it is hard to stop and appreciate exactly what is surrounding me. It’s one of the reasons why Molly’s Climate Change Collective post resonated with me this month–especially when she talks about an emotional connection with nature fostering a deeper understanding. I am…

It Matters that Climate Change Impacts the Little Things
Climate change is one of those things that touches on every part of our planet even when those parts are out of sight and out of mind. For our Climate Change Collective conversation this month, Michelle at Boomer Eco Crusader raises the topic of how climate change in the Arctic affects us all. Shrinking ice surfaces on the earth are one of the clearest indicators of climate change in my view, but it can be hard to pinpoint how these far away happenings are affecting my life over here on the west coast of British Columbia. Michelle does a fantastic job of identifying direct impacts of climate change in the…

The Importance of Climate Change Education (plus six great resources!)
What is the difference between weather and climate? That’s the question that made me ponder what I know and don’t know about climate change. I’ve found some promising resources and am sharing them below for you. The conversation about weather versus climate was started by Michelle at Boomer Eco Crusader for this month’s Climate Change Collective conversation. Her informative post can be read here and I really recommend checking it out: It’s Cold Outside — The Difference Between Weather and Climate Find out more details…

6 Fantastic Organizations Working To Reduce Food Waste and Scarcity
This month for our Climate Change Collective conversation, we are looking at the concept of food scarcity and how climate change is impacting this. Caroline from Enviroline Blog is leading our conversation this month with her post “The impact climate change has on food security and how to help.” The Reality of Food Scarcity Caroline does a great job in her post of drawing attention to all of the factors that are going to affect food scarcity, such as changing temperatures and extreme weather events. We’ve experienced these two things recently in British Columbia with heat domes and atmospheric rivers and flooding causing extremely challenging growing conditions for farmers. As…

4 ways to use your home to combat climate change
The Climate Change Collective Welcome to the Climate Change Collective series, through which a group of environmentally minded bloggers are trying to keep climate change at the top of people’s minds! In this series, one blogger writes a topical post and the Climate Change Collective participants write a response to their post, sharing thoughts or more information on the topic. This month, Michelle from Boomer Eco Crusader shares about the impact that microforests can have on the environment in the latest Climate Change Collective post here. As I read through Michelle’s post about the impact that microforests can have on an area, I began to think about how we all have…
