3 significant climate agreements and their impact
Climate change remains one of the most pressing global challenges, and international cooperation is crucial in mitigating its effects. Over the years, several significant climate agreements have been established to coordinate global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development. We’ve all seen the names of these agreements in the news, but I’ve not ever been very familiar with how they differ from each other, how they seek to accomplish their stated goals, and how effective they have been. In an effort to learn more about this topic, this week I’m exploring key climate agreements past and present, their benefits and drawbacks, and their impact on global climate…

Will We Ever Get Back Below the 1.5°C Global Temperature Increase?
The world has officially surpassed the 1.5°C warming threshold, a critical limit set by the Paris Agreement to avoid the worst effects of climate change. For years, scientists have warned about this tipping point, and now that we’ve crossed it, one big question remains: Can we ever cool the planet back down? Sadly, though expected, there is no easy fix. While reversing global warming is an enormous challenge, there are still things we can do. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. Molly at Transatlantic Notes is starting off our conversation this month with her post “Global Warning: What Surpassing 1.5°C Means for the Planet.” Learn more about the…

Why Bottle Deposit Systems are Good for the Planet
Incentivizing people to participate in climate positive actions such as recycling can be an effective way to tackle climate change. While adding financial stresses to already maxed out grocery budgets could be a controversial conversation, bottle deposit systems have a proven track record of environmental and economic benefits. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. Michelle at Boomer Eco Crusader is starting off our conversation this month with her post “Carrot or stick? Which works better to reduce our environmental footprint.” Learn more about the Climate Change Collective below. History of Bottle Deposit System in BC I’m always surprised to hear that other places—even within Canada—do not have…

Looking into the Life Cycle of Plastic
Plastic Free July is all about minimizing the plastic in our lives, but why is plastic so bad? A part of the problem is that plastic does not break down. Plastic is not biodegradable, so it takes hundreds of years for plastic to go anywhere. There is an entire life cycle of plastic before it gets to the garbage bin, though, so I want to take a look at this and see how else plastic hurts our planet. This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations. We’re happy to contribute the lead post for the conversation this month. Learn more about the Climate Change Collective below. Why it’s Important to Connect to our Planet and some ways to do so
I was travelling on the ferry last night and standing in awe looking at the view: ocean expanding to the islands, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and the sun setting turning the sky all shades of pink and orange. To say I’m lucky to live where I do is an understatement. What is not an understatement is saying that life gets so busy and overwhelming sometimes that it is hard to stop and appreciate exactly what is surrounding me. It’s one of the reasons why Molly’s Climate Change Collective post resonated with me this month–especially when she talks about an emotional connection with nature fostering a deeper understanding. I am…

It Matters that Climate Change Impacts the Little Things
Climate change is one of those things that touches on every part of our planet even when those parts are out of sight and out of mind. For our Climate Change Collective conversation this month, Michelle at Boomer Eco Crusader raises the topic of how climate change in the Arctic affects us all. Shrinking ice surfaces on the earth are one of the clearest indicators of climate change in my view, but it can be hard to pinpoint how these far away happenings are affecting my life over here on the west coast of British Columbia. Michelle does a fantastic job of identifying direct impacts of climate change in the…
