Eat Local in Every Season: Butternut Squash

    November 3, 2020 /

I was given some local BC butternut squash that was on the verge of spoiling and needed to be saved from going to waste. I was excited for the squash because I’d never actually cooked butternut squash before! Inspired by Krista’s desire to eat local in every season, I was motivated to get the most out of these four butternut squash. I found three recipes that I tried as well as a few more I’m saving for later. October 27, 2020 /

Though summer and it’s abundance of produce is at an end I’ve decided, between my garden and our local producers, to attempt to continue using local vegetables as a mainstay of our diet throughout the fall and winter.  This is new to me and so I’m documenting the foods and recipes I try in hopes that you’ll join me in attempting to eat local and seasonal produce year-round! Selecting a Pumpkin I had actually wanted to write this post a couple of weeks ago but my pumpkin had gone bad. It turned in a much shorter time period than I thought possible, so going forward all my pumpkins and other…

Eat Local In Every Season: Brussels Sprouts

    October 6, 2020 /

Why Local? As we move into fall in southwestern BC, farmer’s markets with their beautiful abundance of local fruit and vegetables are beginning to wind down.  This year my family participated in a CSA (community-supported agriculture) food box from a local farm for the first time.  What is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box? The idea behind these boxes is that the community buys food directly from local producers and supports these producers in their work to grow food in a sustainable manner. We paid a cost in advance and then went to the farm on scheduled days to pick up a box of fresh, local produce. We loved the…
