Secondhand September: Embracing Conscious Consumption
Secondhand September is a month-long initiative encouraging all of us to explore and embrace the world of secondhand fashion and goods. This global movement is not just about finding great deals—it’s about making a positive impact on our planet and our communities.
Along with Platsic-Free July, Secondhand September is one of our favourite months: Alison and I are both avid secondhand and thrift shoppers and a month that focuses on the benefits of secondhand items will always be exciting for us!

The Rise of Secondhand September
Secondhand September was initiated by Oxfam, a UK-based charity organization, as part of its broader mission to promote sustainable fashion and reduce waste. The campaign invites individuals to pledge to buy only secondhand items for the entire month of September. The goal is to challenge our habitual consumption patterns and highlight the environmental and social benefits of choosing secondhand.
Why Choose Secondhand?
1. Environmental Impact: One of the most compelling reasons to go secondhand is the environmental benefit. The fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world, with massive amounts of water, energy, and chemicals used in the production of new garments. By opting for secondhand, you’re reducing the demand for new resources and helping to divert clothing from landfills.
2. Unique Finds: Secondhand shopping can be an adventure in discovering unique and one-of-a-kind items that you won’t find in standard retail stores. Vintage clothing, retro furniture, and antique home decor can add character and charm to your style and home, offering a personal touch that new items often lack. Some of my favourite home decor items have been thrifted, been found by the side of the road, or come to me by some other interesting means! See this past post for a secondhand furniture tour of my home.
3. Supporting Local Economies: Many secondhand stores are small businesses or charitable organizations that support local economies and communities. Shopping secondhand often means supporting these enterprises and contributing to a circular economy, where resources are reused and repurposed rather than discarded.
4. Budget-Friendly: New items can be expensive and secondhand shopping provides an opportunity to find high-quality items at a fraction of the cost. Whether you’re looking for a designer dress or a stylish sofa, you can often score great deals without compromising on quality.
How to Make the Most of Secondhand September
1. Explore Local Thrift Stores and Charity Shops: Your local thrift stores, charity shops, and consignment boutiques are treasure troves of secondhand goods. Spend some time browsing and don’t be afraid to dig deep—sometimes the best finds are tucked away.
2. Check Out Online Marketplaces: Online platforms like Depop, Poshmark, and eBay offer a vast selection of secondhand clothing and accessories. These sites can be especially useful for finding specific items or brands.
3. Attend or host a swap event: Swap events and clothing exchanges are fantastic ways to refresh your wardrobe without spending a dime. Look for community events or organize one with friends to exchange items you no longer need. Check out our past post here on how to host a clothing swap!
4. Get Creative with DIY: If you find secondhand items that need a little TLC, consider upcycling or DIY projects. Transforming an old piece of furniture or customizing clothing can be a fun and rewarding experience. Alison and I have devoted a whole section of our blog to upcyling and reinventing furniture here!
5. Spread the Word: Share your Secondhand September journey on social media to inspire others. Use hashtags like #SecondhandSeptember and #SustainableFashion to join the conversation and connect with like-minded individuals.
Challenges and Solutions for Embracing Secondhand September
While Secondhand September is a fantastic initiative, it’s important to acknowledge some potential challenges. Finding specific items or sizes can sometimes be difficult, and not everyone may have access to quality secondhand stores. However, with a bit of creativity and persistence, most challenges can be overcome. And remember, every effort counts—whether you’re able to fully commit to secondhand shopping or just make a few conscious choices.
Jump into Secondhand September!
Secondhand September is more than just a challenge; it’s a chance to rethink our relationship with consumption and embrace a more sustainable lifestyle. By choosing secondhand, we not only reduce our environmental footprint but also discover unique items and support our communities. Every small step towards more conscious consumption makes a difference. Happy secondhand shopping!

I enjoy these themed months as it’s a really lovely opportunity to put something into place, try something new, or learn about how to make a few changes. I will be investigating some secondhand places in my local area over the weekend, and fit this in as a regular thing. Great tips—thank you!

Earlier this summer, I bought two new dresses at a local thrift store. I felt like I had won the lottery! The thing about thrifting is it takes time to sift through the racks in search of that perfect piece. But it’s so worth it!
