Project DIY: Unexpected Spindle Upcycle
Today I’m sharing a project that was a lot of fun to do, though a little more complicated than my usual DIY projects. I had come across several old spindles in a secondhand shop, and, though I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them, decided to buy them anyway. Read on to find out about this unique upcycling project!

The Project: Turning Antique Spindles into Cake Stands
Why I Love It
I love to decorate my table for occasions, and having a fun cake stand or two on hand makes it even easier to add height and colour to my table displays!
The Plan
Cut down the spindles, then add a large, round piece of wood to the top of the spindle, and a smaller round piece to the bottom. Then paint with chalk paint and seal with soft wax. Soft wax is technically foodsafe when cured, however it’s still good practice to use some parchment or plate directly on the surface.
Supplies List
- Chalk paint
- Clear wax
- Scrap wood, plates, other round objects to attach to spindles
The Process
First we cut down the spindles, then added a large, round piece of wood to the top of the spindle, and a smaller round piece to the bottom. We then painted them with chalk paint and sealed them with soft wax.
