6 Plastic-Free Cold Remedies

Keep in mind that it’s always best to check with your doctor for advice before choosing any cold and flu remedies. We’re not doctors over here, but I wanted to share some plastic-free cold remedies that have worked great for our family–and cold remedies that are natural too!

1. Herbal Teas

Herbal teas are a wonderful way to hydrate and soothe your throat. Opt for loose-leaf teas instead of bagged varieties to avoid plastic packaging. Some beneficial options include:

  • Peppermint Tea: Great for relieving headaches and congestion.
  • Ginger Tea: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can help alleviate sore throats and nausea.
  • Chamomile Tea: A calming option that aids sleep and relaxation, both helpful when we’re under the weather.

How to Prepare:

Simply steep loose-leaf tea in a reusable tea infuser or strainer with hot water for 5-10 minutes.

2. Honey and Lemon

A classic remedy, honey and lemon is not only soothing but also supports our immune system. Look for honey sold in glass jars to avoid plastic.

Recipe:

  • Ingredients: 1 tablespoon honey, juice of half a lemon, hot water
  • Instructions: Mix the honey and lemon juice in a mug and fill with hot water. Stir well and enjoy!

3. Steam Inhalation

Steam inhalation can help clear congestion without any packaging involved. This method is especially useful for easing sinus pressure.

How to Do It:

  1. Boil a pot of water.
  2. Remove from heat and carefully lean over the pot, draping a towel over your head to trap the steam.
  3. Breathe deeply for 5-10 minutes.

4. Broth-Based Soups

Homemade soups are nourishing and can be packed with vitamins to help fight off colds. Use glass containers for storage and avoid bouillon cubes that often come in plastic packaging.

Simple Broth Recipe:

  • Ingredients: 1 onion, 2 carrots, 2 celery stalks, garlic, herbs (thyme, rosemary), salt, and pepper.
  • Instructions: Chop the veggies, sauté in a pot, add water, and simmer for at least an hour. Strain and enjoy as a warm broth or as a base for soup.

5. Essential Oils

Essential oils can be used in diffusers or topically (diluted with a carrier oil) for relief. Purchase them in glass bottles to keep things plastic-free.

Recommended Oils:

  • Eucalyptus: Helps clear the respiratory system.
  • Lavender: Calms the mind and promotes better sleep.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Known for its antimicrobial properties.
