No Spend June: Spending less, living more
Between birthdays, Mother’s Day, and a nearly completed kitchen renovation, it feels like the past few months have involved a lot of purchases. With summer vacations just around the corner, June feels like the perfect time for a reset and that’s what drew me to the idea of doing a No Spend month this June.
Despite the name, a no-spend challenge isn’t about deprivation or avoiding every purchase. Instead, it’s an opportunity to become more intentional about spending and take a closer look at the habits that often happen on autopilot. A coffee on the go, a sale that’s too good to pass up, or another item that promises to make life easier—these small purchases can add up quickly, both financially and environmentally.
For me, No Spend June feels like a chance to pause before summer, save a little money, reduce waste, and appreciate what I already have. Whether you’re looking to cut back on spending, simplify your home, or embrace a more sustainable lifestyle, this challenge can be a helpful reminder that sometimes enough is as good as a feast!

What is a No Spend month?
No Spend June (or any month!) is a personal challenge where you commit to avoiding non-essential purchases for 30 days. The rules can be strict or flexible, but the goal is generally the same: spend less, consume less, and become more mindful of where our money goes.
Essential expenses typically continue, including:
- Groceries
- Rent or mortgage payments
- Utilities
- Transportation
- Necessary healthcare expenses
The focus is usually on reducing discretionary spending such as:
- Clothing
- Home décor
- Books
- Beauty products
- Takeout and convenience purchases
- Impulse online shopping

Tracking progress
Tracking progress can make a no-spend month feel more motivating. I’m planning to track my progress by documenting things I could have purchased, but didn’t. There are many options for free printable trackers, and they include tracking progress by days of non-spending, as well as by purchases not made. It’s also maybe a good month to track actual spending if you haven’t been – I’m planning a reset on this as well!
Why a No Spend month is also an eco-friendly challenge
While No Spend months are often framed as a budgeting challenge, they can also be a surprisingly effective sustainability practice.
Every item we buy requires resources to produce, package, transport, and eventually dispose of. By pressing pause on unnecessary purchases, we naturally reduce our environmental footprint.
A no-spend month can help:
- Reduce packaging waste
- Limit impulse purchases
- Decrease household clutter
- Encourage repairing and reusing
- Build appreciation for what you already own
In many ways, consuming less is one of the simplest forms of sustainable living. I speak a bit about this in a previous post about what we can learn about sustainability from past generations, linked here.
Ideas for a successful No Spend June
Shop home first
Before buying something new, see if you already have a suitable alternative tucked away in a drawer, closet, or storage bin. I know I often buy kids items on sale, then totally forget and buy the same items again. I now know to check my usual storage spaces before buying new items.
Use what you have
Challenge yourself to finish products before replacing them. This might include:
- Pantry items – combining a No Spend challenge with a pantry challenge is a recipe for success, pun intended!
- Cleaning supplies and toiletries
- Craft supplies and household products

Borrow instead of buy
Need a tool, book, or party item? Consider borrowing from a friend, family member, or local library. I recently shared a post about 10 things you probably don’t need to own!
Find free summer activities
One of the best parts of June is that many enjoyable activities cost very little. Consider:
- Nature walks
- Beach days
- Community events
- Picnics
- Library programs
- Gardening
- Riding bikes
- Making cold treats

Unsubscribe from marketing emails
Removing temptation can make a no-spend challenge much easier. A quick inbox cleanup can reduce the urge to browse sales and promotions. As an added bonus, unsubscribing from marketing emails can also have a small environmental benefit by reducing the energy required to store, process, and send unnecessary emails.
What I like about the idea of a No Spend month
What I appreciate most about a no-spend challenge is that it shifts the focus from what I don’t have to what I already do. Instead of constantly looking for the next purchase, I spend more time using, enjoying, and appreciating the things that are already part of my life.
It’s not about perfection. There may be unexpected expenses or purchases that genuinely make sense. The goal isn’t to avoid spending at all costs—it’s simply to become more intentional.
