Simple Living

Make the most of summer with your local library

Between vacations, camps, extra outings, and finding ways to keep the kids entertained while school’s out, it’s easy for summer entertainment spending to add up. That’s one of the reasons I love our local library: it’s one of those places that offers so much without costing a thing. Whether you’re looking for a stack of great books, a fun family activity, a quiet place to escape the heat, or something new to learn, the library is a great place to start!

And today’s libraries are about so much more than borrowing books. They offer free programs for all ages, ebooks and audiobooks you can access from home, community events, clubs, workshops, and even unique items you can borrow in many communities. It’s a simple, sustainable way to save money, reduce consumption, and make the most of summer.

If you haven’t stopped by your library in a while, this might be the perfect time to rediscover it. Here are some of my favorite reasons to make the library part of your summer routine!

1. Save money on books

My kids and I both love to read, which means the cost of buying books can add up quickly. A trip to the library lets us bring home a whole stack of books for free, so everyone can discover new favourites without stretching the budget. It’s also a simple way to live more sustainably.

By sharing books instead of everyone buying their own copies, fewer resources are needed to print new books, making the library a win for both your wallet and the environment. As an added bonus, there are fewer books to find space for and declutter later!

2. Keep kids reading all summer

Many children experience the “summer slide,” where reading skills can slip a little over the long break from school. I love using the library to help keep my kids reading because it makes books feel like a fun summer activity instead of homework.

Since we don’t have to buy every book, they can choose whatever catches their interest—graphic novels, mysteries, sports, animals, fantasy, or even something completely different they might not normally pick. If they don’t love it, we simply return it and try something else. Many libraries also offer summer reading programs to keep kids motivated.

Our local library has a wonderful program where children earn weekly prize entries for tracking their reading and receive a reading medal at the end of the summer, which gives them something fun to work toward.

3. Take advantage of free summer programs

Summer is often one of the busiest seasons at the library. Depending on your community, you may find:

  • Storytimes
  • Craft afternoons
  • STEM activities
  • LEGO clubs
  • Magic shows
  • Animal presentations
  • Author visits
  • Movie afternoons
  • Teen events
  • Gardening or sustainability workshops

These activities provide free entertainment and learning opportunities without class fees or purchasing new toys!

4. Borrow eBooks and audiobooks

Heading out on a road trip, spending the day at the beach, or relaxing in the backyard? Your library can come along with you! Many libraries offer thousands of ebooks and audiobooks that you can borrow right from your phone, tablet, or e-reader, making it easy to enjoy a good story wherever you are. Audiobooks are especially great for long drives, family vacations, or listening while you’re gardening, walking the dog, or tackling household chores. It’s a simple way to enjoy more books without adding more clutter to your home.

5. Discover more than books

Many people are surprised by everything libraries lend beyond books.

Depending on your branch, you may be able to borrow:

  • Board games
  • Puzzles
  • Nature backpacks
  • Birdwatching kits
  • Musical instruments
  • Wi-Fi hotspots
  • Seeds for gardening
  • Technology and equipment

Borrowing instead of buying is one of the easiest ways to save money while reducing clutter at home. For more ideas about things you can borrow instead of buy, check out this post!

6. Meet new people

Libraries help build stronger communities by bringing people together around shared interests.

You might find:

  • Book clubs
  • Knitting or crochet groups
  • Writing circles
  • Language conversation groups
  • Chess clubs
  • Board game nights
  • Gardening clubs
  • Local history groups
  • Tech help sessions
  • Volunteer opportunities

Whether you’re new to the area or simply looking to meet people with similar interests, the library is a great place to start!

7. Enjoy a free place to spend time.

Many libraries offer comfortable spaces where you can curl up with a book, get some work done, study, or simply take a quiet break from the summer heat. Some have children’s play areas, outdoor reading gardens, or cozy seating areas where families can spend an afternoon together. It’s a welcoming, air-conditioned alternative to shopping malls or expensive attractions and a great reminder that some of the best summer activities can be completely free.

8. There’s always something new

Libraries are constantly adding new books, bestselling novels, cookbooks, magazines, movies, and digital resources.

Even if you’ve visited before, there’s always something different waiting to discover. Make it a weekly tradition this summer and see what catches your eye each visit!

Make the library part of your summer

The library truly is one of those hidden gems in our communities. It offers so much value without asking for anything in return—whether that’s helping us save money, encouraging our kids to keep learning, giving us opportunities to connect with others, or helping us make more sustainable choices. In a world where so many activities come with a cost, it’s refreshing to have a place where we can spend an afternoon, discover something new, and create memories without opening our wallets.

If it’s been a while since your last library visit, this summer is the perfect time to stop by and see what’s available. You might be surprised by everything your local library has to offer. From books and programs to community connections and resources you can borrow instead of buy, a library card may be free—but the experiences, knowledge, and opportunities it provides are priceless.
