Not only can renewable energy provide us with electricity, but it can also help us move away from a dependence on fossil fuels. Our Power, Our Planet is the theme for Earth Day 2025, which carries a focus on “harnessing renewable energy to build a healthy, sustainable, equitable and prosperous future for us all.”

With this theme in mind, we are focusing our next few weeks on the different types of renewable energy options. This renewable energy series will take a look at the good, the bad, and the encouraging sides of each type of renewable energy. This week’s focus is on solar energy as a renewable energy source.

Today on the blog I’ll be exploring the the benefits and potential of solar energy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Every day, the sun showers Earth with an incredible amount of energy, and solar panels work like leaves on a plant, capturing this sunlight and turning it into energy. But how does this process actually work? It all starts with photovoltaic (PV) cells, the tiny powerhouses inside solar panels. These cells are made from semiconductor materials, usually silicon, that absorb sunlight and release electrons, creating an electric current. This direct current (DC) electricity then passes through an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) electricity—the kind that powers everything in our homes, from lights to refrigerators.

A good way to think of harnessing solar energy is to imagine a garden hose: sunlight acts as the water, PV cells absorb and channel it, and the inverter is like a nozzle that controls the flow, making it usable for daily needs. Real-world examples of solar energy in action are everywhere, from rooftop panels powering homes (like mine!) or spacecraft as they move through the universe to vast solar farms supplying electricity to entire cities.

Why Solar Energy is a Better Option for the Planet

Solar energy is one of the most promising solutions to the world’s energy needs, offering numerous environmental and economic advantages over traditional fossil fuels. Unlike coal, oil, and natural gas, which release harmful carbon emissions and contribute to climate change, solar power generates clean, renewable energy.

Beyond its environmental benefits, solar energy is also a smart economic investment. While the initial installation cost of solar panels can be significant, technological advancements and government incentives are making solar energy more affordable than ever. Once installed and through the payback period, solar panels provide free electricity for decades, helping homeowners and businesses save on energy bills.

Many countries also offer net metering programs, allowing solar users to sell excess energy back to the grid, allowing for use of excess energy generated with or without a battery array. Moreover, the growing demand for solar energy is driving job creation in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance, helping to boost local economies.

The Latest Challenges and Breakthroughs in Solar Energy

While solar energy is one of the most promising renewable energy sources, it still faces several challenges, one of the biggest obstacles being energy storage. Since solar panels only generate electricity when the sun is shining, storing excess energy for low light or snowy days is a must if you’re planning to operate off-grid. This is, of course, not an issue if you’re planning to connect to a grid where net metering is an option. Traditional batteries, like lithium-ion, can be expensive, have limited storage capacity, and have an environmental impact in terms of their manufacturing requirements and disposal. However, ongoing advancements in batteries are increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and extending storage capabilities making off-grid living more attainable.

Another challenge is the efficiency of solar panels. While modern panels are much better than those of the past, they still convert only about 20-25% of sunlight into usable electricity. As with batteries, innovation is ongoing with the aim of increasing efficiency while decreasing cost.

One of the most exciting breakthroughs in solar technology is the development of solar skins and transparent solar panels. These innovative products allow solar panels to blend seamlessly into buildings and windows, making solar adoption more flexible in that the panels may be applied to any surface rather than only a roof!

The Impact of Solar Energy Around the World

An inspirational application of solar energy comes from India, a country looking to renewable energy to meet its growing electricity demands. The Bhadla Solar Park in Rajasthan, one of the largest solar farms in the world, spans over 14,000 acres and has a capacity of 2.25 gigawatts—enough to power millions of homes. This project has helped India reduce its reliance on coal, cut carbon emissions, and create thousands of jobs in the renewable energy sector. The success of Bhadla has encouraged further investment in solar power, pushing India closer to its goal of meeting it’s climate goals.

Beyond large-scale projects, solar energy is also transforming rural communities. In Africa, organizations like Solar Sister are providing solar-powered lamps and home systems to off-grid villages, replacing toxic kerosene lamps with clean, sustainable lighting. This shift not only improves air quality and reduces fire hazards but also extends working and study hours, boosting education and economic opportunities.

How to Advocate for Clean Energy

Supporting the transition to clean energy doesn’t require a massive investment—small actions can make a big difference. One of the most effective ways to contribute is by installing solar panels on your home or choosing a renewable energy provider if your utility offers that option. Even if you can’t install solar panels, using energy-efficient appliances, reducing electricity consumption, and supporting businesses that prioritize renewable energy all help drive the demand for cleaner power.

Advocating for clean energy policies is another crucial step. You can contact local representatives to support legislation that promotes solar incentives, tax credits, and renewable energy projects. Attending community meetings, signing petitions, and spreading awareness on social media can also amplify these messages.

On a personal level, making conscious choices—such as driving electric or hybrid vehicles, reducing single-use plastics, or supporting companies committed to sustainability—magnify in impact when we all take initiative to use our choices to support change!
