Sustainable Living

How joining together makes a difference for our planet

The last couple of months I’ve been pretty close to house-bound due to a recent injury. This period of time has truly highlighted the value of community to me. I would have suffered and struggled so much more if it were not for the people that rallied around me.

It feels fitting that we’ve come up on the two year anniversary of our Climate Change Collective. The Climate Change Collective is a group of bloggers that have monthly conversations via our blogs about different climate change related topics. This month, we’re taking time to look back on how many topics we’ve covered together.

For me, this anniversary is a reminder of how much more we can accomplish when we join together for a cause. This entire season has been a reminder of how much more enjoyable life is when we join together with others.

Why Joining Together is a Powerful Thing

Being a part of a community and sharing like minded goals can be a powerful thing. There are so many benefits to partnering with others and to building like minded communities.

Here are a few reasons why joining together is a positive thing:

We can learn from each other.
We can have our views challenged in ways that help us grow.
We can receive support for our ideas and goals.
We can join resources and skills which allow us to make bigger impacts.
We can encourage each other when facing challenges or discouragements.
We can brainstorm and come up with creative ideas for problems we are facing.
We can use our multiple voices to make a louder and more impactful statement.
We can foster relationships that help us know we are not alone.
We can learn to be a support to others as they face challenges.

These are just a few thoughts on why community and joining together with others is a valuable thing. I know I’ve benefitted so much from the support, encouragement, and wisdom of each of our Climate Change Collective group.

Ways to Join Together to Tackle Climate Change

Whether it is just with one other friend, an online group, or an in-person club, there are loads of ways to join together with others. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Read a sustainable, earth-friendly focused book with some friends or join a book club
  2. Find a Sustainability or Climate Change Club at your school or community centre
  3. Volunteer with a sustainable initiative
  4. Find a climate change protest to take part in
  5. Have intentional conversations with your friends
  6. Join an online group or chat room where you can learn from others and share your own knowledge (I love my local Zero Waste Facebook group)
  7. Organize a beach clean up or a neighbourhood clean up in your area
  8. Start a letter writing campaign with a friend to let your local politicians know which climate change topics matter to you
  9. Find an online challenge (like Veganuary or Plastic Free July) and take part with others

The Climate Change Collective

This post is a part of our Climate Change Collective conversations.

The Climate Change Collective was born out of an exchange that took place between Michelle and Jamie in the comments section of a Jamie Ad Stories blog post. Jamie and Michelle both care deeply about the impact of human activity on our planet and wanted to find a way to keep the climate change message top of mind for everyone. A tweet was sent out, bloggers responded, and we’ve all now teamed up to create the Climate Change Collective! Learn more about the bloggers behind this group in our post introducing everyone: Get to Know our 5 Fantastic Climate Change Collective Bloggers.

The idea is simple. The members of the collective will take turns writing a monthly blog post sharing their concerns and unique perspective about climate change. After the post is published, the rest of the group will keep the conversation going by sharing a link to the post on their blogs along with their thoughts and ideas. If you’re a like-minded blogger and would like to join our collective, please get in touch. The more the merrier!
