Fun, frugal and festive: Create your own pom pom garland
Christmas is coming really soon, and my kids keep thwarting my efforts to forget HOW soon! They’re very excited to get out the decorations and jump into all the fun of the season – and one of their favourite things is Christmas-themed family craft time.
One fun and easy-to-make decoration that can instantly transform any room is a pom pom garland. With a few simple materials that you can probably find around the house, and a bit of creativity, you can craft a cheery garland that adds a festive flair to your home. In this step-by-step guide, I’ll walk you through the process of creating your own pom pom garland. Don’t have yarn? Use rags or scraps of fabric to make a garland like this one!
This is a super simple craft so it’s easy to get the kids involved! For other Christmas fun with kids, see our post here!
Materials Needed:
- Yarn in various colors
- Cardboard or a pom pom maker – or your hands!
- Sharp scissors
- Twine or string
Step 1: Choose Your Colors Select a palette of yarn colors that complement your decor or match the theme of the occasion. Consider using a mix of vibrant and neutral tones for a visually appealing garland.
Step 2: Create the Pom Poms
Option 1: Cardboard Method
- Cut a piece of cardboard into a rectangle, adjusting the size based on your desired pom pom size.
- Wrap the yarn around the cardboard, creating a thick layer. The more wraps you make, the fuller your pom pom will be.
- Carefully slide a piece of yarn through the wrapped yarn and tie a tight knot at the center.
- Use sharp scissors to cut through the loops on both ends.
- Trim any uneven strands to form a round pom pom.
Option 2: Pom Pom Maker
- If you have a pom pom maker, follow the instructions provided with the tool to create perfectly shaped pom poms.
Option 3: Use your hands!
- Follow this tutorial to make a pom pom with just your own two hands!
Step 3: Make Multiple Pom Poms and repeat the process to create as many pom poms as you desire for your garland. Aim for consistency in size to achieve a polished look.
Step 4: Lay out your pom poms in the desired order, considering color distribution and spacing. This step allows you to visualize the final garland before assembly.
Step 5: Attach Pom Poms to Twine
- Cut a length of twine or string to your desired garland length.
- Thread a needle with the twine and carefully pass it through the center of each pom pom.
- Tie a secure knot around each pom pom, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
Step 6: Find the perfect spot to showcase your handmade pom pom garland. Drape it over a mantel, along a staircase, or across a wall to instantly elevate the festive atmosphere in your home!
Crafting a pom pom garland is a fun and budget-friendly way to add a touch of fun to any space! Whether you’re decorating for a special occasion or simply want to infuse your home with some whimsy, this DIY project is sure to bring creativity into your living space. Experiment with different color combinations and sizes to create a unique garland that reflects your personal style. Happy crafting!

I used to love making pom poms, and they look so lovely when made into a garland! I have some old yarn that I need to use up so this is the perfect craft activity for me right now.
