7 Eco-friendly beach essentials for sustainable summer days
Beach days are one of those outings where it’s easy to make choices we might not normally think twice about—grabbing bottled drinks, individually packaged snacks, disposable cutlery, plastic toys, or other single-use convenience items simply because they feel easier in the moment.
With summer approaching and vacation planning underway, I’ve been thinking more about the kinds of beach items that I want on hand for this year—simple, thoughtful essentials that help make beach days easier, more practical, and less wasteful.
If you’re also looking to build a more sustainable summer routine, here are some plastic-free beach essentials to consider!
1. Reusable water bottles
A beach day without enough water is never a good idea, so reusable water bottles are always one of the first things I pack. Bringing bottles for everyone helps avoid the need for single-use plastic drinks throughout the day, and if you have little ones, smaller lightweight bottles make it easier for them to carry their own and stay hydrated independently.
2. Reusable cutlery, napkins, and snack containers
Instead of reaching for individually wrapped granola bars or crackers, bring homemade or bulk snacks in reusable snack containers alongside reusable cutlery and cloth napkins. Reusables can significantly cut back on single-use packaging over time, as well as avoiding introducing microplastics into our food.
Great options include:
- Cut fruit
- Homemade muffins
- Crackers or trail mix
- Sandwiches in beeswax wraps
3. Reef-conscious sunscreen
Sun protection is non-negotiable for a beach day, but it’s worth being mindful of the products you bring. Choosing reef-conscious sunscreen in minimal packaging can help reduce harm to marine ecosystems, while SPF lip balm offers an easy way to protect often-forgotten skin. UV-protective clothing, cover-ups, and wide-brim hats are also great additions, helping you stay comfortable in the sun while reducing how much sunscreen you need to reapply throughout the day.
4. Plastic-free toys and entertainment
For babies, kids, and even adults who like to stay busy, consider sourcing and having ready for summer outings toys like:
- Metal sand buckets or secondhand beach toys
- Wooden beach paddles/games
- Books or magazines
- Nature scavenger hunt printables
- Card games
The most sustainable option is often simply using what you already own or buying secondhand first

5. A wet bag or large reusable pouch
It can be tempting to toss a plastic bag into your beach tote for wet or messy items, but a reusable wet bag or washable pouch is a much more eco-friendly alternative. They’re perfect for storing wet swimsuits, damp cloths, sandy items you want to keep separate, or even any trash and recycling you need to bring home with you. It’s one of those simple swaps that makes beach days feel both easier and less wasteful.
6. Reusable tote or beach basket
A durable beach bag is one of those simple essentials worth choosing thoughtfully. Pick something you genuinely love and will use for years—whether that’s a natural fiber basket, a sturdy canvas tote, or a secondhand bag with plenty of life left in it. The most sustainable option is one that holds up well, fits your needs, and becomes your go-to for many beach days to come.

7. A small bag for beach clean-up
This may not be an “essential” in the traditional sense, but consider bringing a spare bag for any litter. Even picking up a few pieces on your way out can make a difference!
Final thoughts
Like most things in sustainable living, it’s less about buying a whole new set of “eco” products and more about slowly replacing disposables with reusable options that fit your life. For me, the best low-waste swaps are the ones that make life simpler—not more complicated.
A thoughtfully planned beach day means less trash, healthier snacks, and a little more ease when heading out the door. And truly, that’s the kind of sustainability I keep coming back to: practical, imperfect, and rooted in everyday habits.
