DIY Ugly Christmas sweater: Upcycle an old sweater into a holiday classic

Ugly Christmas sweaters have become a holiday staple — bright, goofy, quirky, and proudly over-the-top. But as fun as they are, most people wear them only once or twice before tossing them in the back of the closet… or worse, into the trash. That’s where things get a little less festive. Textile waste is a huge worldwide problem, and novelty garments like holiday sweaters quietly contribute to it every year.

Instead of buying another fast-fashion sweater destined for a landfill, the eco-friendly solution is surprisingly fun: make your own. Last year, feeling frugal, my daughter and I created a DIY sweater for her ‘Red, Green, and Bling’ spirit day at school, and it worked out really well! It was fun, unique and personal to her, as well as a budget-saver at an expensive time of year. Upcycling an old sweater isn’t just budget-friendly — it’s also a creative way to cut back on waste and show off something truly unique.

The fashion industry: Why upcycling matters

The global fashion industry produces an enormous amount of waste — in fact, experts estimate that around 92 million tonnes of textiles end up discarded every single year. Some reports break it down even further: imagine an entire garbage truck filled with clothes being tossed out every second. It’s a staggering idea, and seasonal clothing items are an element in this issue.

Many ugly Christmas sweaters on the market today are made with synthetic fibers, which means they take decades or even centuries to decompose. Meanwhile, novelty holiday-themed sweaters are not worn many times due to their specialized nature. And because they’re worn so infrequently, they’re prime candidates to be discarded.

Making your own sweater from something you already own (or something thrifted!) helps slow down that cycle. It’s a small step, but one that adds up when more people join in.

The benefits of an upcycled Christmas sweater

Choosing to create a unique and upcycled ugly sweater gives all the charm of the holiday tradition without the hidden environmental cost. Reusing materials already on hand, saving money on buying something new, and adding personal flair is far more fun than wearing the same mass-produced sweater everyone else bought at a big-box store. And why not make creating an ugly sweater into an event with friends and family, adding the fun of community to the task? Additionally, purchasing something from a thrift store goes to support a local charity rather than a large corporation, both of which are consistent with the values of the holiday season!

By choosing a sweater made of natural materials as the starting point, we avoid materials that shed microplastics or contribute to pollution. By using natural fibers when possible and repurposing trims, fabric scraps, and old buttons, it’s possible to create something festive without relying on disposable, plastic-heavy designs. Best of all, once you make a sturdy DIY version, you can pull it out year after year — turning it into a true holiday ritual rather than a one-off purchase. It’s a simple shift, but one that aligns the fun of the holidays with more mindful, eco-conscious living!

How to DIY your own ugly Christmas sweater

  1. Choose a base sweater — ideally an old one from your closet or a thrift store find.
  2. Gather materials — felt, scrap fabric, old buttons, ribbon, leftover holiday fabric, yarn, non-toxic fabric glue, or needle and thread.
  3. Sketch or imagine your design — whether it’s snowflakes, reindeer, ornaments, or a completely chaotic collage.
  4. Cut and attach your decorations — sew or glue your pieces in place. Don’t stress about perfection — messy is part of the charm.
  5. Lean into sustainable materials — choose recycled or repurposed embellishments when possible, and skip anything plastic-heavy like glitter.
  6. Reinforce if needed — especially if the chosen sweater is thin or well-loved.
  7. Wear it proudly — and keep it for future holiday seasons so it becomes part of your yearly tradition
