Celebrate National Yoga Month: Affordable, eco-friendly, and good for you

September is recognized as National Yoga Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of the many health and wellness benefits that yoga offers. Though we’re nearly at the end of the month, it’s never too late to consider what benefits yoga might hold for you! Whether you are stepping onto the mat for the very first time or have an established routine, National Yoga Month is a great time to pause, breathe, and reconnect with both body and mind.

Benefits of yoga

Yoga is more than stretching or physical exercise—it is a holistic practice that supports overall well-being. The benefits of yoga are wide-ranging and many people have found that regular practice can:

  1. Reduce stress by calming the nervous system through mindful breathing and gentle movement;
  2. Improve flexibility and strength, releasing tension in the body while building balanced stability;
  3. Enhance focus and mindfulness, which carry over into daily life; and,
  4. Support mental health by reducing anxiety and lifting mood.

Getting started with yoga

One of my favourite things about yoga is its simplicity and accessibility. Unlike many forms of exercise, yoga does not require a gym membership, complex routines, or expensive gear. For these reasons, getting started at home is very simple!

A few key items that might help with getting started can include:

  • A yoga mat is commonly used, but a soft rug or blanket works just as well. Alison and I love our Scoria mats!
  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is all that is required.
  • Props such as blocks, straps, or bolsters can be helpful but are optional.

If you’re new to yoga, you may not know that there are various types of yoga that have different purposes. Because of this, it is possible to tailor your practice for what you feel that you need at a particular time. Some days may call for a restorative approach that relieves tension and promotes relaxation. On other days, you may feel drawn to an energizing flow that strengthens the body and improves focus. What matters most is consistency rather than length. Even five minutes of gentle stretching and mindful breathing provide benefits when practiced regularly.

For anyone exploring beginner yoga, it is essential to approach yoga practice with patience and self-compassion. Yoga is not about achieving perfect poses but about listening to your body and accepting where you are in the present moment.

There are many resources out there to assist with getting started; many online communities include regular challenges along with a wide range of instructional videos that vary in length, focus area, and type of practice. It can be a lot of fun to find a few options and try them to see what works best for you!

Thoughts on yoga mats

While yoga can be practiced on almost any surface, many people enjoy using a yoga mat for comfort, stability, and safety. Increasingly, practitioners are turning toward eco-friendly mats, for both health and environmental reasons. Alison has previously shared a review of her Scoria mat here!

Unlike traditional PVC mats, eco-friendly yoga mats are made with sustainable materials like natural cork or rubber. These materials are non-toxic, biodegradable, and often provide superior grip. Beyond personal health benefits, investing in an eco-friendly mat also helps reduce plastic waste and environmental impact, making each practice a step toward a more sustainable lifestyle.

Is yoga for you?

As September encourages us to focus on wellness, it is the ideal time to begin or renew a yoga journey. Whether you dedicate a few minutes each morning to yoga for beginners at home or commit to longer sessions when your schedule allows, the benefits of yoga are available to everyone. No special equipment or prior experience is necessary—just an open mind, steady breath, and the willingness to begin.
