Beeswax wraps: A practical guide + LOONMOON review

A practical swap: Are beeswax wraps worth it?

The problem: The hidden cost of convenience

Plastic wrap is one of those kitchen staples most of us use without a second thought—until we start noticing just how often it shows up. Cover a bowl, wrap a sandwich, store some leftovers – it adds up quickly. And unfortunately plastic wrap is hard to recycle thanks to food residue and its thin, clingy design, so most of it ends up in landfill.

Beyond the waste, there’s also growing awareness around plastics and microplastics—not just in the environment, but in our food and bodies—which makes those small, everyday choices feel a bit more important.

For Alison and I, the goal is never to be perfectly zero-waste, but rather to find a lower-waste alternative that feels easy, practical, and realistic enough to use every day.

The solution: Beeswax wraps as a low-waste kitchen swap

Beeswax wraps are a simple, reusable food wrap designed to replace single-use plastic in many day-to-day tasks. Made from fabric coated in a blend of wax and oils, they soften with the warmth of your hands, allowing you to mold them directly around food or to the shape of any container.

They’re what I used instead of plastic wrap for:

  • Covering bowls of leftovers
  • Wrapping sandwiches or snacks
  • Storing cut fruits and vegetables

Alison and I have loved the idea of beeswax wraps for years and have tried quite a few versions—along with attempting to make our own (which didn’t go so well). And we always enjoy trying a new option, especially when it’s a Canadian small business!

A note from my kitchen: How I use beeswax wraps

At this point, beeswax wraps are something I use regularly in my kitchen. I reach for them instead of plastic wrap for:

  • Covering dough while bread rises
  • Prepping baking ingredients (keeping dry and wet components separate before mixing)
  • Storing food in bowls in the fridge for those big containers without a lid
  • Folding into envelopes for snacks on the go
  • Wrapping fruits and vegetables to keep them fresh – my most exciting find was how well these wraps kept half an avocado!

They’re also easy to clean (just cool water and mild soap), and at the end of their life, they can be composted—another great feature.

As a side note – these are not suitable for use with raw meat or fish as they can’t be properly sanitized. Also, the coating will melt in high heat, so they can’t be used for hot products or in the microwave.

The day-to-day: What I enjoyed about LOONMOON beeswax wraps

If you’ve tried beeswax wraps before and didn’t love them, you’re not alone. However, here’s what stood out to me about about these ones:

  • The colours and patterns are bright and cheery—they made me smile when I opened the package!
  • They’re noticeably thicker and more substantial and the wax coating feels more evenly applied, which makes them easier to use and seal
  • They have a good grip for wrapping sandwiches, produce, and snacks on the go
  • After learning more about microplastics and their impact on health, I’ve been trying to reduce plastic at home in simple, manageable ways, and this is a quick, practical step in that direction
  • I love that they come from a Canadian business that’s intentional about its environmental impact

Compared to thinner wraps I’ve used in the past, the difference is noticeable right away—they seal better, stay in place, and don’t need constant readjusting and are generally just nicer to use.

About the brand: LOONMOON

LOONMOON is a Canadian-owned brand positioning itself on creating practical, reusable kitchen goods, currently with a focus on beeswax food wraps made in Canada.  Designed for everyday use, LOONMOON wraps are intentionally a little thicker than many alternatives, which helps them seal better, handle repeated use, and hold up in busy kitchens.

Rather than chasing perfection, LOONMOON focuses on low-waste swaps that actually get used, framing sustainability as something practical, approachable, and durable enough to fit real life.

Their commitment to reducing waste extends to product packaging—simple kraft paper wrapping with product details and a biodegradable mailer.

Materials and what’s inside

LOONMOON wraps are made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients:

  • Cotton (South Korea)
  • Beeswax (British Columbia)
  • Pine rosin (Quebec)
  • Jojoba oil (United States or Israel)

This combination of materials is what creates the flexible, slightly tacky texture that allows the wraps to cling and seal effectively.

Final thoughts

Sustainability doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing – in my experience, it’s the small, repeatable changes that actually stick!

Switching to beeswax wraps won’t eliminate all kitchen waste—but as a practical, low-waste kitchen swap, it’s an effortless change to incorporate into daily routines.
