9 Ways to Use Your Voice for Climate Action

Earth Day 2026 is just around the corner and this year’s theme is Our Power, Our Planet which is about the power we all have as individuals to make a difference. With that in mind, this week I’m looking at 9 ways to use your voice for climate action. Sometimes the world can make us feel small, but we are truly more powerful than we realize and our voices do make a difference.

Use your voice for climate action

Our Power, Our Planet is Earth Day 2026’s theme reflecting a fundamental truth: environmental progress doesn’t depend on any single administration or election. It’s sustained by daily actions of communities, educators, workers, and families protecting where they live and work.

Our individual actions matter. It’s as simple as that.

One reason Krista and I started this blog and continue to maintain it is that we want to be continually thinking about and sharing about sustainability and climate change. It is our way of working to make a difference for our planet.

What we’ve found is that our voice can make a difference. Yours can too!

Here are 9 ways you can use your voice for climate change:

1. Share on social media

It really can be as simple as that. You can get creative and share something personal or you can help highlight the work of others. The more that climate change and sustainable living is talked about and shown in the world, the more awareness and change we can bring.

2. Talk with your coworkers on your lunch break

The conversations don’t need to be deep to be impactful. You can go into the impacts of plastic on our everyday lives if you are up for it, but if that is too much pressure during a hectic workday, simpler conversations are just as important to have. My Pixie Mood purse made from recycled plastic bottles often generates fun conversations. Or you could talk about sustainable food packaging by showing off your beeswax wraps. These are great conversations to have to encourage sustainable living.

3. Talk to your friends and family

Lighthearted to deep, conversations about the planet help to raise awareness for climate change and help to inspire each other to make sustainable choices.

4. Write to your local government officials

The more our government officials hear about climate change, the more likely they are to do something about it. They need to hear about the issues that we care about. Whether it is a more general issue or a specific one to your community, write to your government official and let them know about it. They are in office to represent you, so use your voice to let them know that climate action is important.

5. Write to federal government officials

Don’t stop at your local officials, let the federal government know your thoughts too.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has a variety of issues and concerns that you can report to them with instructions on how to do so. Find their website here: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/corporate/contact.html

The current Minister of Environment and Climate Change is The Honourable Julie Dabrusin and she can be contacted here:

6. Start a petition

If you have an issue you are particularly passionate about, why not start a petition and encourage others to use their voices for climate action as well.

Check out this website from the Canadian government on how to submit an environmental petition: https://www.canada.ca/en/auditor-general/environmental-petitions.html

You can also find petitions already started to add your signature to and then share with others on websites like Change.org.

7. Host an event at your school, church, or community space

Inspire others by hosting a fun event to bring awareness to climate change. This can be as big or small as you want it to be.

  • Organize a rally at the local government office to speak out about climate injustices
  • Host a clothing swap (learn how here: How to Host a Clothing Swap)
  • Organize a beach clean up
  • Host a repair cafe
  • Clean up litter on your street with your neighbours

8. Attend and participate in local events

If you want to participate but not organize, head out to a local event. Or, even better, grab some friends and head out to participate in an event together.

Check out the Earth Day Events Map for local events.

9. Write about it

Whether it is a blog post, a letter to the editor of your local paper, or a song you write, put pen to paper and get those words out in the world. It is amazing what an impact our words can have.
