7 Ways to be an Eco-Friendly Pet Owner

This year my family and I adopted a new pet family member, picture below! We love the fun, entertainment, and companionship of having a pet, but having a pet also comes with an environmental footprint. We lost our last cat in 2019 and starting the journey with our new pet has had me thinking about ways to incorporate sustainable practices into our decisions.

From pet food production to waste management, our furry (or not furry!) friends’ habits can impact the planet. However, with conscious choices, we can create more sustainable lifestyles for us and our pets!

Here are some practical eco-friendly tips for pet owners looking to reduce their carbon paw-print:

1. Choose Sustainable Pet Food

  • Opt for Eco-Conscious Brands: Our cat has specific food requirements, and so might your pet! However, some considerations when selecting a pet food, if you have several options, could be to identify brands that use sustainable practices, responsibly sourced ingredients, and minimal packaging. Organic and ethically farmed options often have less environmental impact, as well.
  • Go Plant-Based or Hybrid: Some pet owners consider incorporating plant-based meals or a hybrid diet however you should always consult your veterinarian to ensure your pet’s nutritional needs are met.
  • Make your own: There are many recipes available for DIY for pet treats, maybe give a few a try!

2. Make Eco-Friendly Toys and Accessories

  • DIY Pet Toys: Repurpose household items like old T-shirts, socks, or cardboard boxes to create fun toys for pets. This helps minimize waste and reduces the demand for new, mass-produced toys. Reah loves pipe-cleaners and markers – we often find our missing items in her secret hiding spot!
  • Sustainable Materials: If you’re buying toys or accessories, consider choosing products made from natural or recycled materials like hemp, bamboo, or recycled plastic.

3. Mindful Waste Disposal

  • Waste Bags: Using biodegradable or compostable waste bags for picking up after your dog might seem like a good option, however if these enter the landfill they won’t biodegrade. Composting safely (but not using pet compost for edible crops) or flushing where cities allow are options to research and consider.
  • Eco-Friendly Cat Litter: Traditional clay-based cat litters are often strip-mined and non-biodegradable. Opt for natural alternatives like those made from recycled paper, wood, or wheat.

4. Grooming with Care

  • Eco-Friendly Grooming Products: Choose shampoos and grooming products that are biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals. Look for brands that use natural ingredients and minimal packaging.
  • Water Conservation: Bathe pets only as needed to save water, and use a nozzle attachment that conserves water flow during baths.

5. Pet Gear with a Purpose

  • Upcycled Pet Beds: Instead of purchasing new pet beds, consider upcycled options or make one yourself from old blankets or cushions.
  • Durable, Long-Lasting Gear: Invest in high-quality leashes, collars, and harnesses that last longer, reducing waste and frequent replacements.

6. Minimize Chemical Use

  • Pet-Friendly Cleaning Products: Traditional household cleaners often contain chemicals that are harmful to both pets and the environment. Choose eco-friendly, pet-safe cleaning products or make your own using ingredients like vinegar and baking soda. We’ve posted recipes and instructions in a past post here!

7. Outdoor Impacts

  • Attendance at parks: Consider walking to nearby parks for walks rather than driving in order to reduce carbon footprint of transportation. If a pet has been recently had topical flea treatment applied, they should not swim in rivers or lakes as this can impact the ecosystem.
  • Cats and birds: My sister’s cat has a terrible talent for catching hummingbirds. In order to ensure that your cat doesn’t display similar talents, attaching bells to collars is an easy way to annouce that kitty is coming!

Final Thoughts

Living an eco-friendly lifestyle with our pets is all about making conscious choices that promote the health of our pets and the planet. Every small change, from sustainable pet food to eco-friendly waste disposal, contributes to a greener, healthier world. Start by integrating one or two of these tips, and before you know it, you and your pet will be well on your way to making a positive environmental impact.
