20 Budget-friendly Easter activities to do with kids
Easter is a time my family and I always enjoy celebrating together. Over the years we’ve tried many fun Easter activities for kids, from dyeing eggs to baking special holiday treats. As my kids are getting older, some of our traditions have changed, but we still love finding simple ways to celebrate the season and spend time together.
I especially enjoy activities that are low-waste, budget-friendly, and easy to do at home. Many of the best Easter memories come from simple traditions like baking, crafting, decorating eggs, and getting outside in the spring sunshine.

In this list, I’m sharing a few Easter activities our family already loves, along with some new ideas I’d like to try this year. If you’re looking for simple Easter traditions, eco-friendly Easter ideas, or fun things to do with kids at Easter, these activities are a great place to start.

1. Dye Easter Eggs: Dyeing Easter eggs is a classic Easter activity that children love. In the past I’ve made natural dyes from kitchen ingredients such as turmeric, onion skins, or red cabbage to create beautiful colors while keeping the activity simple and low waste – and learning about science too!
2. Make an Easter Tree: An Easter tree is created by placing a branch in a jar or vase and decorating it with hanging ornaments. Kiddos (and adults!) can paint eggs, cut paper shapes, or tie ribbons to make a colourful and cheerful spring decoration.
3. Bake Paska: Baking traditional paska together is a meaningful way to celebrate Easter and share family traditions. Children can help knead the dough, shape the loaves, and decorate them before baking. My grandmother passed last year, and baking paska was a tradition she followed each year. This year we’re looking forward to a fun time of baking, as well as remembrance. This is my favourite recipe – give it a try and let me know what you think!

4. Decorate eggs with markers: Instead of using dye kits, children can decorate hard-boiled eggs with washable markers, crayons, or simple stickers. This is a quick and creative activity that works especially well for younger kids.
5. Bake Easter cookies: Homemade cookies are always a fun holiday activity. Kids can help roll the dough, cut out shapes like eggs or bunnies, and decorate them with icing or sprinkles.
6. Make paper Easter decorations: Use recycled paper, old magazines, or leftover craft materials to create egg garlands, bunny cutouts, or colorful window decorations.
7. Create a reusable Easter basket: Instead of buying plastic baskets, repurpose something you already have, such as a woven basket, cloth bag, or small box, and decorate it together. I’ll admit, I do have a good amount of plastic Easter decorations, including baskets – however I save everything and use it year after year.
8. Host a backyard Easter egg hunt: An Easter egg hunt is a simple tradition that children look forward to each year. Hide decorated eggs around the yard or house and let kids search for them – and also a fun game for adults to remember where we hid everything!
9. Plant spring flowers: Easter is a wonderful time to plant seeds or bulbs together – check out my post about gardening for beginners here! It’s the perfect time to get some plants started that can be enjoyed all summer.
10. Make bunny ears: Create simple bunny ears from cardboard or paper and let kids decorate them with crayons, paint, or cotton balls. They can wear them while playing Easter games.
11. Read Easter books together: Set aside time to read Easter or spring-themed books as a family.
12. Go on a spring nature walk: A family nature walk is a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of spring. Kids can look for blossoms, birds, and other signs of the changing season.

13. Make salt dough Easter ornaments: Salt dough made from flour, salt, and water can be shaped into eggs, bunnies, or flowers. Once baked, children can paint their ornaments.
14. Create an Easter scavenger hunt: Turn a traditional egg hunt into a scavenger hunt by writing clues that guide kids to different locations around the house or yard.
15. Make an Easter activity jar: Write simple activities on slips of paper and place them in a jar. Kids can pull one out and act it out, such as hopping like a bunny or telling a joke.
16. Decorate the Easter table: Let kids help prepare the table by arranging flowers, placing cloth napkins, or making handmade place cards for family members.
17. Make bunny crafts from paper rolls: Recycle empty toilet paper rolls by turning them into bunny crafts with paper ears, drawn faces, and fluffy tails.
18. Create an Easter countdown: Make a paper chain or simple calendar to count down the days until Easter. Kids can remove one link each day.
19. Set Up an Easter colouring station: Create a small craft area with Easter coloring pages, crayons, and markers so children can draw and color whenever they’re feeling creative.
20. Make chocolate nest treats: Melt chocolate and mix it with cereal to form small nests, then place candy eggs in the center. Kids enjoy both making and eating these treats.
